Welcome to the site of Tidal Power US and sustainable energy devotee Libby Murphy.

Tidal Power US is an introduction to the newest renewable energy technology and its development in the United States. Free-flowing tidal turbines require no fuel, produce no pollution, and have minuscule effect on the environment per unit energy. The resource for tidal energy is enormous, predictable and power dense (water is 1,000 as dense as air). The Northeast has a strong, constant and predictable tidal resource that makes tidal power development more possible and economical on a regional-scale basis than wind or solar. Beyond providing clean, local and renewable energy, tidal power development has the potential to reduce the region’s carbon footprint and create thousands of new green jobs. TPU is a non-profit collaborative project first funded by the Compton Foundation in 2008 and is now being continued and broadened by its founder Libby Murphy.

Founder, Libby Murphy has been working in renewable energy and sustainable development since the age of 17. She is currently an M.S. student in Climate Science and Policy at Bard College’s Center for Environmental Policy. She hopes to pursue an MBA starting in the Fall of 2012. Before going back to school, Libby spent two years as the project manager for Hudson Valley Grass Energy, a non-profit startup that designed, built and runs the first full-scale mobile agricultural pellet mill in the US. In 2008, Libby was awarded one of 10 national Compton Mentor Fellowships to study the tidal power capacity of the Northeast coastline. As a Compton Fellow she received an ESRI Non-Profit Grant for her work in GIS mapping. The project’s websites received enormous attention from thousands of hits from over 130 countries worldwide. Prior to this she spent four years at a tidal power startup company and graduated from Vassar College in Geology. At Vassar, Libby took a leadership role on the college’s Committee on Sustainability where she led the Energy Subcommittee and pioneered the first campus-wide electricity challenge. She also was awarded a SURFO fellowship to study ocean physics at the Graduate School of Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island during the summer of 2007. Libby speaks spanish and has a love of Mexican culture, having lived and studied in Oaxaca, Mexico. She also maintains a lifetime commitment to music, playing the violin, piano, bass and any instrument she can get her hands on. She is currently the bassist for rock band Madre Padre.
